INTRODUCTION

CHANEL Nexus Hall to Present the Work of
Acclaimed American Photographer
Roe Ethridge

CHANEL Nexus Hall presents the work of photographer Roe Ethridge, on view from February 2026. The show is comprised of a series of composite image collages commissioned for the inaugural edition of CHANEL’s ARTS & CULTURE magazine, which was published in June 2025.

CHANEL has worked with American photographer Roe Ethridge over the past decade, and recently commissioned him to explore a collection of Gabrielle Chanel’s treasured possessions. The photographer was invited behind closed doors to capture objects from the Patrimoine—the House’s archive—alongside personal items from the couturière’s apartment at 31 rue Cambon, Paris.

Presented in an exhibition format for the first time, Ethridge’s photographs bring Chanel’s belongings to life. Among the objects featured is a bust of Chanel by Jacques Lipchitz; a manuscript of Poèmes pour Misia by Pierre Reverdy; a book with illustrated dedications to Chanel from Gala and Salvador Dalí; Pablo Picasso’s sketches for Le Tricorne; and an Egyptian funerary mask from the second century AD. Paired with contemporary props and photographed in a Parisian studio, the mise-en-scènes introduce a new layer to Gabrielle Chanel’s legacy.

Gabrielle Chanel’s revolutionary designs and her passionate commitment to supporting the arts placed her at the vanguard of 20th century creativity. Today, her legacy is immortalised through the places, stories, and objects of her time. Together, they embody Chanel’s visionary ideas and the friendships she nurtured with avant-garde artists. The photographs commissioned by CHANEL and on display in the accompanying exhibition at Nexus Hall extend the House’s century-long tradition of championing the leading artists of the era.

Roe Ethridge is one of America’s leading contemporary photographers. Born in Miami, Florida, in 1969, Ethridge moved to New York in his twenties and sustained his practice through commercial photography. Working across these two spheres, he realized that an outtake from a beauty shoot could match the ambitions of his artistic work. This insight established the framework for his continued exchange between fine art and applied imagery, shaped in part by his interest in the work of artists like Andy Warhol and Lee Friedlander. Ethridge’s images create unexpected correspondences, offering a clear view of how photographs function: holding private meaning while reflecting broader cultural conditions.

His work is represented in the collections of major institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; S.M.A.K., Ghent; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Modern, London; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. His work is also regularly featured in publications such as Interview magazine, The New Yorker, Vogue, and GQ, earning him widespread recognition in the commercial sphere. Ethridge is represented by Andrew Kreps Gallery, Gagosian, greengrassi, and Mai 36 Galerie.
