INTRODUCTION

CHANEL NEXUS HALL host up-and-coming Cuban artist Mabel Poblet’s first ever solo exhibition in Japan entitled “WHERE OCEANS MEET”.
Mabel Poblet is considered one of the rising stars of the Cuban contemporary art scene. As a visual artist, her work is particularly eclectic and uses different techniques such a mixed media, photography, video art, kinetic art, performance art and public art. In 2017, her installation “Escala de Valores” was exhibited at the Venice Biennial. Her work is in direct relation with her life experience: her identity as a young woman who grew up in Fidel Castro’s Cuba and more generally, her relation to the world.

【Theme: Water and Sea】

“WHERE OCEANS MEET” is an invitation to get acquainted with one of Mabel Poblet’s cherished themes, water, which is also a common denominator between Cuba and Japan and the uniqueness of cultures where islands co-exist with the sea.

Whereas the sea can be perceived as a dividing element, it can also be regarded as a feature we not onlyshare but, that brings us closer together. The water is the common vehicle to any islander’s journey, although the individual experiences are different and influenced by cultural and political circumstances. Emigration, for example, is an ordinary phenomenon in  contemporary  Cuban  society  and  has  an  important  place  in  Mabel  Poblet’s work. Without judgement, she observes, narrates and questions this occurrence and the ocean’s essential role, being sometimes a salvation and other times a curse.

This exhibition will feature new works from the series My Autumn, Homeland and Travel Diary, as well as the video installation SUBLIMATION (from the series Buoyancy).
