Yoshio Hamano

Yoshio Hamano has had the privilege to study with the distinguished artists of our times: Eliso Virsaladze, late Elena Ashkenazy, Dmitri Alexeev, Gerald Fauth, and Nikita Fitenko DMA. Yoshio completed his Master of Performance and Artist Diploma in 2015 at the Royal College of Music London. Yoshio obtained the Bachelor of Arts degree in 2012 from Tokyo University of the Arts, where he studied with Atsuko Okada, PhD. Yoshio has been a laureate of international piano competitions, such as the Nordic Piano Competition in Malmö, Almaty Int’l Piano Competition, International Russian Music Piano Competition, and Minoru Nojima Yokosuka Piano Competition. The 1st prize at the 2011 Music Competition of Japan has aided him in achieving recognition as a prominent recital artist.
Yoshio’s performing career has brought him to numerous venues across Japan, including the prestigious Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Recital Hall and the CHANEL Pygmalion Days series, and the United States, United Kingdom (Royal Festival Hall, Purcell Room, St Martin-in-the-Fields), as well as Australia, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Russia, Serbia, and Sweden. He has performed extensively as soloist with orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Japan Philharmonic at Suntory Hall, Tokyo Symphony, Central Aichi Symphony, Geidai Philharmonia, Lund City Orchestra, working with distinguished conductors Alexander Lazarev, David Geringas, Kazuki Yamada, Naoto Otomo and Masahiko Enkoji among others.
Having a dual Japanese-Russian background, Yoshio has felt obliged to devote his passion for music-making to facilitating dialogue between cultures through the arts. Continuously since 2022, he has unequivocally denounced Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine and advocated for humanitarian and cultural aid.
Yoshio Hamano has contributed as lecturer of piano at Tokyo University of the Arts as well as Tokyo College of Music before being promoted to Assistant Professor of piano at Tokyo College of Music in April 2022. He extends his work to adjudicating international competitions as well as serving as faculty at masterclasses and festivals, including the annual Washington International Piano Festival (Washington, D.C. / artistic director: Nikita Fitenko DMA). Yoshio Hamano is a board member of the Washington International Piano Festival.
