Fumie Kato
Cello
Born in Kyoto, Fumie Kato graduated from Doshisha Senior High School, and majoring in cello, from the Department of Instrumental Music, Faculty of Music of Tokyo University of the Arts. While at Tokyo University of the Arts, she received the Ataka Award, Acanthus Music Award and Mitsubishi Estate Prize. Upon graduation from the master’s degree program of Tokyo University of the Arts, she was awarded the Postgraduate Acanthus Music Award. With the unanimous agreement of the conservatoire, she also graduated at the top of her class at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris.
To date, she has studied under the late Minoru Sugiyama, Donald Litcher, Fumiaki Kono and Raphaël Pidoux. Among the awards she has receivedare1st prize at the 8th Viva Hall Cello Competition, 2nd prize in the string section at the 7th and 8th Tokyo Music Competition, and 3rd prize at the Concours FLAME, Paris. She was a recipient of the 2011 Kyoto City Special Bounty Program for Arts and Culture and a Rohm Music Foundation scholarship student in 2011 and 2012. She has played with numerous orchestras including the Osaka Century Symphony Orchestra conducted by Shigeo Genda, Geidai Philharmonia conducted by Takuo Yuasa, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Masahiko Enkoji, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenichiro Kobayashi, and Kyoto Symphony Orchestra conducted by Keiko Mitsuhashi. She is a registered artist of the Japan Foundation for Regional Art-Activities in 2014 and 2015.
