Jan-Erik Gustafsson

Finnish cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson won First Place in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1994 followed by acclaimed debuts in New York and Washington, D.C., performing Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with the New York Chamber Symphony at Lincoln Center. He also performed Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante with Washington, D.C.’s National Symphony Orchestra, and The Washington Post wrote that he "set the work ablaze with fury and grandeur." Mr. Gustafsson is the Director of Loviisa Sibelius Festival in Finland. He has performed as soloist with numerous orchestras in the USA and Europe, including the London Symphony Orchestra, The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic (Russia) the Vienna, Camerata Bern and Lausanne Chamber Orchestras, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Stockholm Philharmonic; the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin, Swedish, Finnish, and Danish Radio Symphonies. In Asia, Mr. Gustafsson has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and in Japan he gave a recital tour including Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, and performed in the first YCA Festival Week at CHANEL NEXUS HALL. The record label Ondine has released three of Mr. Gustafsson's CDs. The first, named Recording of the Year by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, contains sonatas by Szymanowsky, Kodaly and Schnittke. The second disc includes Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the third disc includes Einar Englund's Cello Concerto with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Gustafsson plays a Carl Giuseppe Testore cello made in Milan in 1718 and loaned to him by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
